Belgian illustrator Herge launched his famous sleuth and reported Tintin with this book. It was done in black and white. The drawings are all meticulous and I particularly like Milou his dog known in the UK as Snowy. Snowy has a lot to say for himself like, "I'm getting a bit fed up with playing ghosts!" The political situation of the time meant that the Belgians were concerned about the rise of communism in Russia at the time and Tintin gets into scrape after scrape trying to help the "White Russians." It is all a bit madly frenetic and as a story is not more than a 2 star rating. Herge's later books pick up a lot as far as the story line goes and the pictures come in colour.

Interesting early incarnation of Tintin. Fascinating to see how the character began.
