I haven't played this particular game yet, but I played the Starfleet Command: Neutral Zone edition, which is very similar and it's predecessor style. If they improved upon that, then Volume II must be the best PC game for Star Trek in The Original Series/Movies time era, if you like strategy games and thinking and controlling a very detailed and complex starship. The gameplay guide is very detailed and thick (page wise), and I'm looking forward to reading it front to back, then playing this game for many years to come. One drawback is you have to download patches, based upon errors from the original producing company's corporate greed and mismanagement, but downloading them is easy from a good website. I used http://www.dynaverse.net/downloads.php?game=SFC2%20EAW for "v2002 and v2036 patch" and "Battle at the Grave of Thoughts patch" for one of the missions which was listed. You must have a fast internet connection though, abt 24 MB total. Just run the v2036 ".exe" file and it automatically updates the installed game, then unzip the "battle" file and follow instructions using the "readme.txt" for that update; otherwise my rating would have been "Excellent".Read full review
I've always been a fan of Star Trek and, for a couple of decades now, Star Fleet Battles (the simulation board game from which Starfleet Command is inspired). I must admit that I was a bit disapointed with this title. I've played the first version for PC before and I can say that this second version is buggier than the first. It's got more ship types and options, better graphics and a working "strategic" map but this latter isn't what I expected in the first place. I thought I could play a strategic war campaign with it but it can't be done. It's just a backgroud generator for the campaign's storyline. Some of the functionalities from the first version were revised to the detriment of gameplay. For example, whereas you could direct your squadron's other ships to go to a certain point in space in the first version, it is impossible in this one. This makes playing multiship squadrons even more difficult than it was before. But, all in all, it's a good game and it is fun to play. At least for a Star Fleet Battles aficionado like me. I plan on playing multiplayer scenarios in the future but, until then, I can't comment on this aspect of the game.Read full review
This is one of those games that you either like it or hate it. There doesn't seem to be any middle ground on this. If you liked StarFleet command you will more then likely get a kick out of this game....
