All opinions are subjective and they are just my own opinions, please keep this in mind. Three reasons to purchasing this headphone: 1. Purely for the sake of the ebony wood enjoyment aesthetically; 2. Adds to my collection because it's been end of production as I like wood product from AT so much; 3. And of course W5000 excel in a few genres that I can not live without. With T1 for home listening and T5p for on-the-go, W5000 seems a bit redundant for the moment: this wood can is neither on par with T1(or anything at this level of purity paired with DAC+Amp) nor convenient for subway/flight/library as T5p. Here are some thoughts. Genres not suitable for W5000: 1. Symphony: W5000 has a vast sound stage even broader than T1. Strangely yet W5000 is a closed design. Indeed the acoustic properties of ebony wood may create the illusion of huge amount of air inside this can and achieved this kind of sound stage to an artificial level. Sound stage is critical for most of live recordings and such but if it is too good to be true, you may not feel the aliveness of actual performance by orchestra. That said, when listening to Symphonies on W5000, I feel the music is not focused, too loose, ensemble too far away, not precise and well, not good. 2. Chamber music Still the sound stage compromised most of recordings on this genre, especially with violin concerto, when compare the sound of W5000 with T5p out of iPad, W5000 just do not have the clarity of virtuoso. Then for piano concerto, W5000 is quite weak in terms of details. 3. Rock, Rap, Metal, Brit and Punk Well W5000 is just not having the fun factor when playing these genre, Monster Beats by Dr. Dre may be the right headphone for them. Let's leave pop genre to the pop minded headphones. 4. New age However, W5000 is quite relaxing if one can not fall asleep around 3 in the morning. I had goose bumps listening to artists like Enya and The Secret Garden: W5000 is capable to let listener emerged in this type of music and you start to meditation. Imagine you are in the world of Elves and they singing to you far away behind milky fogs, like in The Fellowship of the Ring. 5. J-pop and J-classic Right, W5000 is made in Japan and crafted for these types of music. Especially for female vocals. Oh in fact W5000 is great for artists like Lana del Ray, Katie Melua and so on. For J-classic I mean the works by Hisashi Joe, Sakamoto Ryuichi, Takatsugu Muramatsu, Yoshimata Ryo etc. And I have equal amount of J-pop CD collections as my DG collections (approx. 200 copies) and W5000 is exclusively for J-pop side of my listening. For the ergonomics aspect of W5000, the angled driver design need a redesign(or the leather pads are too soft and crushed too much?) because if wear it for more than 1 hour my right ear would feel some sour due to the right driver unit touching my upper auricle. And thus I need to constantly adjust the position of the phone on my head. The weight of W5000 is compareble with any other ATH series phones, but the effective 3D wing headband design help to distribute the weight of this full size closed headphone perfectly. So in my headphone garage, I see my three headphones as: T1----Audi RS6, an all-rounder yet have supercar like punch on Autobahn, 8AT, turbocharged; T5p---BMW M4, full of passion when driver hard on track and easy to cruise as daily drive, 6MT, turbocharged; W5000-Toyota Crown Majesta, lay back in the back seat for relaxing, 6AT, NA.Read full review
