There is a lot of versatility to this camera - I like the ability to take still photos along with the filming ability - the camera quality is nice and I've recieved several compliments about the pictures it takes. The camera has trouble connecting to a AV cord to a TV the sound comes in but not the picture - I'm not sure if it's the camera or the cord - I will probably upgrade in the near future to something that has a lot of the same abilities as this camera but just on a little higher quality.
Although this proto-HandyCam retailed fior $1100 in ‘97 it’s a good buy today at around $120 w/ all the accessories (batt, cords, lens cover, charger). The image quality and recording format (MiniDV cassette) are outdated - it’s not HD at 640K pixels. Still, the camera is simple to use and takes great video and even better stills at 1/4000 shutter speed. *Anything going onto a computer though, you’ll want to save onto the Flash Card. This camera WILL NOT play nice with PCs nor MACs directly.* My intended use is strictly playback of tapes recorded on an original 1997 model to be dubbed onto DVD through a dedicated burner - no computer needed.

I bought this item to replace the broken one I have used for years. There's nothing else like this out on the market for the price, ease of use for allt he functions we require as a growing family. Currently, I use the camera to film our older children for sports when requested by College recruiters, this camera is great for this purpose. Indoor Basketball to outdoor soccer, it's been awesome at the beach as well as at Weddings. The "Camera" feature is an added bonus, which captures unique moments while filming. Overall, an enjoyable purchase with another outstanding ebay seller!
An excellent and robust camera with a wide range of capabilities; I purchased one new in 2002 and it is still giving excellent service. The model that superceded it is not (apparently) as good. I took the opportunity to buy a second (used) DCR-TRV17 recently on Ebay while they are still available. I have also been advised that in most cases these cameras can be repaired and serviced while many newer camcorders cannot.
Sony TRV17 is one of the best cameras on the market still. Has one of the largest view screens available which gives great quality pictures and user friendly functions. Play back is very good and quality of recordings are as good as any camera on the market. Would recommend this camera.
