Die Entwicklung der Herztransplantation in Deutschland ist ein aufregendes Kapitel. Der Anfang war schwer, und es bestand ein enormes Risiko als - nach der spektakulären ersten Herztransplantation durch C. N. Barnard 1967 in Kapstadt - 1969 die erste Herztransplantation in Deutschland gewagt wurde. Fehlende Erfolge ließen die frühen Herztransplantationsprogramme bald erlöschen, doch nach 12-jähriger Pause wurden die Transplantationsaktivitäten 1981 wieder aufgenommen. Dieses Buch gibt einen Überblick über die Entwicklung der Herztransplantation in der Bundesrepublik Deutschland und der ehemaligen DDR. Im Mittelpunkt stehen die chirurgischen Vorgehensweisen und die oft dramatischen Komplikationen. Darüber hinaus wird die Entwicklung der Transplantationszentren und die aktuelle Situation in Deutschland inkl. der Sicht der verschiedenen Religionen dargestellt. Exkurse zu den Anfängen der Herzchirurgie und der Transplantationsimmunologie - auch im internationalen Vergleich - runden das Werk ab.
