Heutzutage stellt sich nicht mehr die Frage, ob Unternehmen innovativ sein müssen, sondern vielmehr wie. Tendenziell ist erkennbar, dass klassi-sche Innovationsmanagement-Werkzeuge auf geänderte Rahmenbedingungen, die bspw. mit der Entwicklung des Web 2.0 einhergehen, wenig Lösungsansätze bieten und zu starr an die konservativen Strukturen einer Organisation gekoppelt sind. Im unternehmerischen Kontext stellt es sich als Herausforderung dar, ein Unternehmen zu einer Innovation 2.0-Organisation zu verändern. Neben der Struktur und den Prozesse verändert sich auch die Unternehmenskultur sowie das Interaktions- und Kommunikationsverhalten, intern als auch extern. Das dabei zustande kommende und auch neue Wissen muss anders organisiert werden. Wissensnetzwerke sind Communities, in denen Wissens- und Informationsaustausch gezielt gefördert, gemeinsame Ideen produziert und Innovationsvorhaben durchgeführt werden. Während klassisches Innovationsmanagement auf systematische Planung, Steuerung und Kontrolle von Innovationen innerhalb der Grenzen einer einzelnen Organisation fokussiert ist, reifen in der Wissens- und Dienstleistungsgesellschaft die Voraussetzungen für ein neues Innovationsparadigma.
