I already have a digital SLR camera, which I consider my "main", "serious" camera, but it's quite bulky and if I need flexibility I need to carry a large bag full of lenses and accessories. Sometimes, we go out with family and there's no sense in having the encumbrance just for snapshots. I bought the Nikon J1 as my "backup", "fun" camera, for less serious photography when out and about, and it's a great alternative to the SLR. Image quality is very good, and with the HD video feature it's very handy. I have the standard 10-30mm zoom, and it's quite adequate for casual use. There are other lenses and accessories available, and I might invest in a longer, faster lens for portraits. Battery life is good (the battery is larger than that for most compact cameras), and the 10MP sensor is just perfect for low noise when conditions demand a higher ISO. Good points: image quality, HD video, battery life, size, accessories. Bad points: small flash is really only useful for fill in (as you'd expect), the mode dial on the rear occasionally gets moved to the wrong mode (in pocket) and catches you out, the price is quite high compared to compacts. I bought this camera in preference to getting a compact, which would have been smaller but probably would have been inferior in image quality (I'm used to SLR quality), and am happy with it.Read full review
I bought this partly to start getting into photography, but my excuse was an impending holiday. It was a great camera for the trip - fairly light and small compared to the chunky DSLRs that lots of tourists were inexplicably lugging around (do you really need a DSLR to take 500 badly-framed shots of your wife in front of famous monuments in auto-mode?). The battery life was great (although less so when using the camera for filming - this runs the battery down very quickly), and I'm very happy with the shots I came home with; this camera gives you far more control than with a simple point-and-shoot. Negatives are that the features on the camera aren't great, and that the flash looks ridiculous (it certainly makes people smile for pictures, though). However, in all it's a great little camera for taking slicker-than-your-average holiday shots and for getting a feel for photography. Good at close-up shots, especially. I'm very happy with it.Read full review
Outdated and discontinued it may be, but it's still a good camera with great image quality if you're looking for something a bit better than a "point and shoot"

I didn't had high expectation for it, but can pull out some decent images if you give it time and attention. Would highly recommend this instead of a normal point and shoot, and with a couple of spares batteries you should feel like a talented photographer in no time.

I already own Nikon D3200 and D40 with pro lens, but I have always wanted the portability and quality which you cannot get always. This is a fantastic camera and great value.
