When Torchwood first arrived on our screens, it tried every hard to prove that it was the adult sibling of Doctor Who. Although the world of Captain Jack's team is the same as that of our favourite Time Lord, the Doctor, the first series is full of very adult themes, from aliens who kill during intercourse, to brutal murders, to themes of ranging from revenge to gay relationships. In fact, Series 1 suffers from this, as some of these elements are shoved down our throats and sledgehammered into the plots, making some of them seem a little stilted. Plus, the actual characters are uneasy bed fellows in this first series. They dont gel too well and some of their ethical boundaries are very blurred. However, series one is still great entertainment. But it isn't until series 2 that the series really found it's feet. Each character now seems to have a purpose and the team itself works nicely. Some of the characters, who seemed a little shallow and 2-D in the first series, are fleshed out and seem more realistic. There's a great deal of pathos in the second series and it everything that was missing from the first outing. Torchwood is no longer the bastard son of Doctor Who. This series proves it deserves to exist in it's own right. And it get's even better with the follow up mini series, "Torchwood: Children of Earth"...boy oh boy, does it!Read full review
