The first diamond in what was to become both the longest and most financially successful cinema franchise in film history… and still they’re raking in the chips down at the Casino Odeon to this day! Awash with iconic imagery and allowing a glimpse at what would have appeared to be another world in early 60’s GB, this was our first glimpse in to the world of Commander Bond… dare I say it...? Dare, dare…! That’ll be Commander Bond… James Bond. While somewhat less high-tech than the latter films, this superb feature still stands the test of time with an easy and timeless grace. Sweeping cinematography, shot in locations that were unseen at the time for the vast majority of the population, as the early pioneers of likes of Alan Wicker were yet to start their travelogue broadcasts, tropical ... Sweeping cinematography, shot in locations that were unseen at the time for the vast majority of the population, as the early pioneers of likes of Alan Wicker were yet to start their travelogue broadcasts, tropical locations and equally exotic characters introduced spellbound cinema goers to, literally, another world. For most Bond fans, this also introduced us to the fine Scottish actor Sean Connery, whose performance immaculately portrayed both the steely side of the character, as well as a warmer undertone, with delivery of both ultimatums and slick charming one liners dispatched with a twinkle in his eyes. This, the Ultimate Edition DVD, whilst initially perceived by myself as potentially a money spinning exercise to squeeze a few more bucks out of the franchise, is simply a no-brainer. There have been many VHS and DVD releases over the years, but my initial, cynical thoughts proved to be heedless… from the slick packaging, abundance of interviews and documentaries, to the needle sharp transfer to digital from the original master makes this quite simply THE issue to both collect and luxuriate in! As a child of about five or six, I remember being taken on the train by my Father to the Odeon in Leicester Square, London, to see Live & Let Die in the early 70’s. This was the original impetus that hooked your reviewer in to the world of Bond and led to repeated trips to the local “flea-pit” in Harpenden (sadly, now a petrol station!) to see the entire Connery back catalogue in a series of “Bond Double Bills”. Dr No with Thunderball, Goldfinger with You Only Live Twice, etc, etc, etc… As this is, sadly, no longer an option, the modern alternative is to land each part of this thrilling franchise on e-bay, buy in the Doritos and dips, and sit back and wallow at this masterpiece, whilst occasionally glancing at the wrapt and enthralled expressions on my godson’s face, who must be about the same age as I was when first I entered this truly exciting world of espionage, double agents, strange and exotic lands, tough “good-guys” and ruthless yet fascinating “bad-guys”… and that’s not bad for a movie that’s now well over 40 years old! Now, explaining the attractions of the divine Ursula Andress, in "that" bikini… well that might be a somewhat more challenging mission! Enjoy…
