I *love* this machine. Firstly, it's absolutely beautiful. I am not a fan of the silver and black styling of the Macbook Pro and Air because I think it's pretty generic - pretty much every PC laptop out there is in those colours. (I long for the good old days of the white Macs...) Anyway, the gold is beautiful, it makes me happy just to look at it! The aluminium body feels amazing, it's extremely sturdy, nothing gives. Every line, edge, and detail is crisp and the build quality just speaks for itself, it really does. Secondly, I love the single port. I know some people hate it. I've read reviews in which people have bought this model then complained that they had to spend an extra £15 for a usb adapter or £65 for an HDMI, usb, charging adapter - I can't help but think - really?? You spend £1,300 on a laptop then complain about an extra £65? Surely, you knew before you bought it that you'd need to do that? If you need a lot of ports - don't buy this Mac. But if you can get by with a usb adapter (this is all I need for my phone, iPod, and DSLR) then the single port shouldn't put you off. It's so so nice to have such a svelte machine without tons of ports (most of which I'd never use) getting full of dust. The battery life is great so you can connect via usb for hours and hours without charging the machine and you're fine. I have been very impressed with the battery life. Also, the machine is designed to be super portable - hence the reduced size and weight - if you intend to have your laptop hooked up to a monitor constantly then this might not be the right one for you. Thirdly, the screen is fantastic, the newly designed keyboard is lovely to type on, didn't take any getting used to at all. I touch type and can type really quickly and smoothly on this keyboard, it's extremely enjoyable. The force touch track pad is great too - the haptic feedback is a great touch and really messes with your head - it feels like you are actually depressing the pad to make a click but, as you'll see if you try doing the same when the machine is switched off, it's a solid pad and the feeling of clicking it is actually a very clever illusion caused by haptic feedback. I'm impressed by this sort of stuff. Oh, and there is no fan! So the machine runs silently. This is so so nice, no noisy, whirring fan, no need to prop the machine up on something because it gets too hot. Apple really has done a great job there. Lastly, the procession speed - yes, on paper it's low. My Lenovo Thinkpad work machine is 2.6ghz and so I'm used to not having to hang about - having said that, my personal machine before this one was a very old Dell which seemed to have to think about everything very thoroughly before actually executing the task I'd asked it to do, so I've experienced both ends of the speed spectrum. The Macbook is 1.2ghz which is less than most mobile phones (I think). I've noticed only momentary lag (maybe 1 second) when loading ad or graphics heavy web pages but on the whole browsing is fast. Having multiple tabs open at once is fine too - for example, if you're shopping and are comparing prices from multiple websites, or researching and are moving back and forth between sources. I use the machine for word processing, web browsing, music, Netflix (which it handles fine), photo editing and occasional work in Lightroom (which I am yet to test out but think should be find based on the tech reviews I've read). I think if you need to do more intensive video editing or high res photo editing often then you might get a bit frustrated with the speed of this machine and would probably be better off with a Pro. I did spend a bit more to get the slightly enhanced version with greater internal storage too, I've no idea if the extra 0.1 ghz makes much difference in terms of speed but I wanted as much storage space as possible as I'll be storing lots of high res digital images (hence why a retina screen was important for me).Read full review
