Firstly this is not an audio visual amplifier, and with digital radio coming through TVs now parts of the spec are redundant. The Denon AVR-3806 7.1 is a a beast of a machine. It sounds fantastic, but requires considerable training. By this I mean if you have the slightest difference in speaker configuration to the ones specified then you need to drill down through the instructions for ages to resolve issues. No bi-wiring. The connector sockets are idiosyncratic and you must check that your equipment is suitable for the amplifier and visa versa. It is 2005 so if youre after Iplayer compatibility its not there. I am a bit of a luddite and hardly think pumping compressed MP3 music through a full on amp makes any sense at all, equally I dont listen to internet radio channels - again why use this magnificaent beast to listen to 24/7 AM Country and Western. After two weeks of playing with the settings it is a beauty to listen too. Switch from BBC1 to BBC HD and the room just fills up. Radio 3 is absolute magic. The audio playing setting for CDs has opened up new dimensions to our extensive CD collection from Led Zeppelin to Kodaly. And the handset is dead easy to use with all less frequent buttons hidden away on a touch sensitive panel. One strange idiosyncracy, the hand set has an OFF and and ON button, not just a power button. If you like real quality of sound then I give this 10/10. If you want simple Surround Sound and plug and play - choose something elseRead full review
Apart from the ascetic issues the amp Is large and very heavy, (parcel force would not leave at my local post office) and is complicated to install.

Yes, it's older, but older isn't always unworthy. Right? Well, no actually. If you have a higher end Blu-Ray player with the required decoding and 7.1 analogue outputs, then you'll be just fine. Let the player decode and pass the signal to the amp, and use the HDMI in/out on the amp just for video. In case you haven't worked it out yet, the 3806 cannot decode audio via HDMI, so either the analogue route or look elsewhere, it's just that simple. Personally I used the analogue route, and was perfectly happy.

As an onwner of a Denon AVC a11sr i could have the oportunity to make some real test with the Denon AVR 3806 commpare to AVC A11SR . The 3806 i can tell you that it has excelent surround capabilitys, verry good chanel separation and ammazing sound. But when it came to music AVC took the 1st place sound is more accurate and precise the bass is more dynamic and it full the room and the voices are warm and present. the AVR is good but it has a little higher bass and the voice is acustic id say a little colder sound . If i got to mark this amp id say 10+ for the movie surround system and for music id say 8. so in conclusion reguarding the price this is a verry good surround amp
