I bought a Humax HDR-Fox T2 because I have been very happy with the the Humax PVR-8000T I previously had. As I have a 1080p TV having a HD PVR gives me a much better picture now. On the whole I am pleased with the Humax HDR- Fox T2 & it was a bonus to find that I can record 2 channels yet still watch a third channel without transferring to TV. However I do not find it as easy to use as the old Humax. I have to try out all sorts of buttons to find what I am looking for.(Like how to delete a file when I decide I do not want to tape the whole series) - you have to press OPT+ by the way. I don't like where the play/pause/rewind/fastforward buttons are on the remote. The remote could be much better designed. I have been spoiled by previously having a Thompson DHD4000 - which is the easiest & best PVR bar none but alas Thompson seems to have disappeared into the sunset & the DHD4000 no longer can be upgraded. With the Thompson you could place the tuners on 2 different channels at the same time. Pause one channel, watch the other channel then during the adverts flick over & play the paused channel, then pause again & flick back to the channel i'm watching again. I do not like the fact that with the Humax I don't know what channel the spare tuner is on & so cannot do this. On the whole I would recommend the Humax HDR-Fox T2 - But if Thompson was still in the game then they would get my vote every time. Humax do stand the test of time though, my sons still have a PVR-8000T each & we've had them years. I wish Comet & Currys had different PVRs set up so that you could mess about on them to see which has the best features & is clear & easy to use. Bought the Humax to replace my trusty old 'Toppy' which had given excellent service and continues to do so but in a different location. Had Topfield produced a HD PVR then I probably wouldn't have considered a change. The advantages of the Humax are well documented, but worth emphasising are: the very intuitive link with the internet - through a wireless modem, in my case); the resultant access to BBC iPlayer, Love Film; firmware updates, etc; automatic creation of a series folder; and a fairly clear menu scheme (once you get to know it!) Why 4 stars? One incredibly annoying feature; put the Humax on standby and the off-air signal to the TV disappears too! In effect you cannot watch the TV without switching on the Humax. A friend asked me if I would recommend the Humax (she was looking for a new PVR) and I had to say no as all her boxes are located in a cupboard under the TV; she would have had to open the cupboard doors to switch on the Humax just to watch off-air TV! And, of course, the Humax is then using more power! I'm told this might be corrected in a future firmware update, but I'm not convinced. The box is sturdy and everything about it smacks of very reasonable quality. The HD side of it works very well though I'm now not at all convinced of its relevance. A friend has one of those cinema sized TVs and HD on that is excellent, but on my modest 26" it's very hard to see any difference. The Humax is expensive and mine is the 1TB version so is even more costly. Was it worth it? Probably!Read full review
Strangely Ebay has asked me to write a product review on an item I haven't bought.... What I did buy was the Humax T2 Freeview box which is amazing, easy to use, good looks and pretty much does everything for you when you first set it up. Only negative is that whilst it is easy to use, it does take a while to work out how to do things and where to find drop down menus etc. But being a bloke I guess that is found in the instruction booklet... Once I had worked out where to find what to play recorded programs etc it was easy. The only negative I have is that the Optimax + button which opens up the menus is one of the smallest buttons and could be made more visible/prominent. Whilst I wouldnt buy it again, I would without a doubt buy the next generation smart freeview which has just come out. well recommendedRead full review
The receiver works provided that you have a really good signal and a really good arial. If not you will get pixelated images, recordings which fail and at times no picture at all. If are buying the box to switch from Sky you may be better using your existing dish and going for Freesat rather than Freeview. However, you must ensure that you have a twin LNB if you do. If you can record programmes on Sky then you do. Having said that if you do not have Sky and want a Freeview recorder then this is better than most out there at the moment. The HD picture quality really is excellent and the software works well. You can do pretty much everything you can with a Sky box, series link, reminders etc. Although the interface is not as clear and simple as Sky, but once you are used to it it works fine. One complaint with the TV Portal though you only get the BBC i-player no 4OD or ITV equivalent. Overall the box works reasonably well provided you are in a good signal area.Read full review
Bought this because I wanted to receive the Freeview HD channels, and liked the ability to record programmes using an external memory. Bad points first: picture quality on standard definition channels is only average (I have seen better on a different box), and it seems you can't record to even a large capacity memory stick (you need a full-blown hard disc). Good points: everything just plain works (apart from the memory stick problem) and the product seems to be very well supported (by firmware updates, whether via the website or over the air).
