THE SICILIAN CLAN This is a classic, old fashioned and rather enjoyable French crime thriller. Directed by Henri Verneuil. It stars the beautiful Alain Delon (though the bloom of beauty is beginning to fade) and an aged Jean Gabin giving a stoic (bordering on the wooden?) performance as a head of a Sicilian mafia family. Head of a crime family ...? yes convincing enough,…Sicilian...?mafioso...? not so sure. It seems the film was made in French but marketed also in Italian and English (this is the English version, which can be confusing as some characters are dubbed whereas others, like Delon obvious are playing it in English). It does have the feel of a glossy, sixties, marketed movie (Gaumont goes to Hollywood?) of the type of French film noir that was so successful in the 40s and 50s. Plot-wise it is sometimes difficult to work out where you are: one minute Menton, next Rome, then Paris .. then outskirts of New York, where a vast airliner lands on the freeway (not wholly convincing film editing there I am afraid). But as I say, it is very enjoyable and mainly you watch it for Delon's sake. He is a cold hearted mafia hitman, yet also somehow the underdog - you most definitely sympathise with him, because no one else does and you want him to win. I am not going to give away the end, but for me it came something as a shock and disappointment, and reverts to something of a cliché. This I think leaves you feeling thwarted with your sympathies in the film somewhat betrayed. But most definitely fun to watch.Read full review
