Tangled Memories
This is a film which shows the vulnerability which belies all relationships. Winslet and Carey play their parts with finesse.-wayward,weird and beautiful-quiet, nervous and sweet-respectfully. After the deterioration of their relationship Winslet's character decides to erase him from her memory. Every dimenson he brought to her life this scientific procedure demolished. What ensues I cannot write because it is so...fun and sad to watch. It is mostly about the art of detangling all the consequences of hurt and pleasure. The film is not shot as a straight-forward narrative, there is a lot of their past in their present, as well as their future. This is confusing at first but adds to the delicacy and intelligence of the film. It creates the question whether it is worth sacraficing ... It's Got: Excellent performances from Kate Winslet and Kirsten Dunst, and a surprisingly restrained (and therefore tolerable) one from Jim Carrey; visual effects that manage to be both low-key and gobsmacking at the same time; and a funny, twisted, bleak, sentimental screenplay that could only have been written by Charlie Kaufman. It Needs: Possibly to be seen more than once (fittingly enough for a film about second chances and déjà vu).
