It is an average album by a great band. A bit dissapointing after a two year wait. For me, the production (far more polished than in previous albums) sort of takes away from the band as it was the Lo-Fi angle that made them stand out in the first place. It's not a total write-off though, there are about three really good songs. It was always going to be hard to emmulate the previous two albums (which really put it in the shade). The new (good) songs will definately be classics when played live, which as anyone who has seen them live knows, is the best way to appreciate the Cribs.
Third, and prior to their latest album, best effort from Wakefields most famous sons. The cribs supurb lyrical capabilities shine like a star on this fantastic vessel. This fantastic collection of tunes should have projected this great band to stadium status but, whilst lesser bands have been projected to undeserved premier league level the cribs still sit mid table in the championship.Probably just where there rabidly loyal fanbase would like them to remain.
Saw these guys at Fat Sams in Dundee. Are they the best singers? No. Are they the best musicians? No. Do they make you want to quit your job, pick up a guitar and form a band with your best mates? f*ck yeah, and they make you believe that anything is possible. Best 3 piece band for a long, long time - perfect pop tunes that hit you and don't get boring. Nice to hear an album with no duff tracks, seriously you can listen to the whole thing and it's all deleriously uplifing. If you like this check out the 60 foot Dolls - the big 3, previously the best 3 piece for ages!
