I like RPGs. Mass Effect 2 is one of the best games I’ve ever played, and I even liked Mass Effect 3, despite the rushed and somewhat disappointing ending. So I had high hopes for Mass Effect: Andromeda, with all the money that had allegedly been thrown at it, combined with the PS4’s superior capabilities. So… what happened? I urgently need to talk about the character animations. Oh my word. They are simply awful. Faces look like they’ve been pumped full of Botox whilst simultaneously having a stroke. People walk like they’ve had a trouser accident. It is really quite distracting. The voice acting isn’t much cop, either. The flat delivery of unnatural dialogue, combined with a character’s eyes darting around like they’re watching a hyperactive mosquito, is so bad it’s funny. And some voices are just incongruous. For example, take the first time you meet a Krogan. This is a big, imposing, armoured warrior alien. The voice that comes to my mind is a loud, deep bass, not the ridiculous hushed, camp voice that actually comes out. Instead of Darth Vader you get Darth Louie Spence. Gameplay is bland and monotonous at best. I gave it four hours, thinking it couldn’t keep being so tedious once the initial missions were over and I could get into my own ship. How wrong I was. The tedium just keeps coming, in fact if anything it gets worse. Explore this boring area that looks like the last boring area (except sand!), open a few doors, read a few notes, talk to some NPCs, turn something on (or off), rinse and repeat until the bad guys turn up. The bad guys who, despite everyone in the game banging on about how scary and dangerous they are, are actually weak and exceptionally stupid. You can break down combat tactics into two categories: 1) when they’re distant, hide behind cover, wait for them to pop their head out, then take it off with a sniper rifle, or 2) when they’re close, hide behind cover, wait for them to pop their head out, then take it off with a shotgun. You could mix things up and use a rifle for a change, but why bother when there are so many ammo refills littered about? Then again, these tactics do depend on mastering the unfriendly and unnecessarily complicated controls. More than once I wanted to change my weapon in the middle of a fight and ended up chucking a grenade at a teammate. Side missions are basically doing fetch quests for people you couldn’t care less about, or looking for resources to upgrade weapons and armour – if you care enough at this point to put the effort in. Which leads me to customisation. My advice with the character creation? Don’t bother. Stick with the default settings. No matter how much time you invest in creating your character, they’ll still come out looking like the elephant man (or woman), walking like John Wayne and talking like a robot. There are a few bugs as well. As well as floating enemies and graphical glitches, I can’t review the multiplayer element of the game at all, because I can’t get online. Because of what I assume is a bug, no matter how much I try I can’t get the latest update to download and install. So let’s just assume that’s rubbish as well, shall we? One last thing. It's a real bugbear of mine not being able to pause during cutscenes, especially if said cutscenes are numerous and so very, very long. In summary then, I’m glad I didn’t pay full price for this game at launch or I would be asking for my money back under the Consumer Rights Act. Mass Effect: Andromeda is not of satisfactory quality, and for me it is not as described because I cannot access the multiplayer element. It is one of the worst games I have ever played, and a black mark on this otherwise great series of games.Read full review

After being angry with the news of the animation, I said I would not buy it, but with the patch I have found it as enjoyable as the previous trilogy, not perfect but no game is, lots to do ,interesting worlds and solid game characters, if the developers get their act together and finish the new trilogy to the same standard so far I would be delighted, good game now continue to improve.

Brilliant game, captivating campaign, fun and intense multiplayer. Only draw back is the animation is a bit buggy but apart from that I couldn't fault it!
