I bought these on ebay with stiff KBS shafts. I always have preferred a traditional look at address with slim topline and minimal offset. While these do not look like blades at address, they are not offensively bulky. The club heads are pretty big and that will take a little getting used to. The short irons are very easy to hit and have good feel. The rounded sole seems to reduce chili dips. Some have complained of high ball flight, but I didn't appreciate that. The wedge and short irons are easy to chip with as well. The long irons give you some feedback and are not hard to hit but are somewhat lacking in the feel department. They are forgiving and this means working the ball is a little tougher. I think these are keepers for a decent player that doesn't get to play very often.
As a golfer who rarely switches equipment, I bit the bullet and went with the R9. I had been playing callaway hawkeye irons for about 10 years. From only hitting these once, I noticed that the short irons have a high trajectory compared to a blade, but fly similar to my old hawkeyes. I LOVE the long irons. 3-5 are actually a joy to swing and the feel of a well struck ball is a delight! My biggest asjustment will be Pitch through 8iron as they seem to fly a few yards shorter than my old hockey stick-like hawkeyes...due to added spin and trajectory I presume. Overall, very nice feel. BEAUTIFUL setup. Nice weight. Worth waiting a year for the price to be cut in half. Go hit these for yourself. (I am about an 8-10hcp for reference - hit 7 iron 170 +/- 10 yards between clubs)
Let's see, this is my 1st, no 2nd, no 3rd, no 5th set of Taylormade irons. I've played Ping i5's, Mizuno MP-52, Callaway X-20 Tours in the past. I started looking for a new set of irons it was between Titleist AP2's and the Taylormade R9 TP's. I've been playing TM TP wedges EXCLUSIVELY for about 9 years so it was natural for me to gravitate to the TM R9 TP's. From the moment you get these clubs out of the box, to putting them in your bag. The thought of wanting to hit them doesn't leave! This is a true classic looking players club. I would not recommend these for the average golfer, but the mid to lower handicap player that really wants feedback to take their game to the next level. At address, it's obvious that these aren't your mother's clubs. These are truly a sexy, sleek and stylish looking club. When you hit these clubs "right" you feel absolutely nothing. However, your off hits ARE NOT forgiving. Again, I would recommend these clubs to the mid to lower handicap player looking to really take their game to the next level.Read full review
I'm a 12 handicap, and I have been playiung TM for a few years already. I was playing the TM TP Burner with S300 shaft, and found that elevating the ball with the long iron was hard for me, but I really like the feeling. I switch to the R9 TP with NS Pro 950 shaft, and I like them, especially the mid to short iron. I tend to elevate the ball a lot, and find this to be even more with these iron. I do like the feeling when I hit the ball, but they are not forgiving on a mishit. There is anything I dislike about them, but it is too early in the season, and I just got it. I have not played much with them yet, but so far I do like them. I still feel that I played the best with Mizuno, but I have been pleased with TM. They are growing on me.
I´ve been playing Ping i5,i3+ blade, Mizuno mp30,mp14, Callaway x-forged, Taylor Made 320. I was playing Mizuno Mp14 when i decided that my game needed more forgiving clubs, my handicap is 3 and my ballstriking is above avarage. Mizuno are the best to hit but lack of forgivenes bring them down. Ping is also great set of irons especially i5, but feel abit chunky sometimes. I would say that R9 tp irons bring out the best of Ping and Mizuno irons combined. Taylor Made R9 tp irons are very classy but yet a modern type of club. When you look down at it the first thought is WOW sexy and these give you plenty confidence also. I love the high boring flight and also the feedback from good struck shots is awesome. If you play Dynamic Gold shafts then KBS should not be a problem, but if you play Project X then don´t go with KBS shafts.Read full review
