Sailing Alone with Billy Collins There is not a poem in this collection With the title "Sailing Alone Around the Room," Which pretty much sums up the state of modern poetry And at the same time is the kind of thing you'd expect From the likes of Billy Collins. He is too popular to be considered classical And too classical to be very popular And the critics aren't sure what to make of him. I discovered him, though I did not plant my flag on his head, On A Prairie Home Companion, reading lines That made me laugh and cry at the same time, Something I usually do not do except when chopping onions And watching Rocky and Bullwinkle or maybe Underdog. If you are only going to read a single collection of poems Written during my lifetime, this is the one. Unless I get ambitious and write my own.Read full review
On the recommendation of Don Miller (Blue Like Jazz, To Own a Dragon, et al), I purchased this book. Very well written, accessible poetry. Scripted portraits gaze benignly from the pages, and impish jests hide just behind the third semi-colon to the left, jumping out with a giggle when least expected.
