This is one of the best sounding synths, if you can find one that is still in good shape. It has many built-in sounds to start from and lots of options to shape the sounds, including effects like reverb and EQ. It is very easy to create sounds since all the controls are visual sliders. The ability to layer up to four sounds on top of each other is also a powerful feature. It does not have a built-in arpeggiator or sequencer, but you can use midi for that. The weakness is the keyboard, which can suffer from the "red glue" problem, wherein the original glue melts and causes problems with the keys. Therefore, it is important to find one with a good keyboard. The other issue is it's very heavy by today's standards, but the sound is worth it.

I own a number of synths ranging from OBXa, DX7 and D-50 to Yamaha Motif and Roland Jupiter 50. I have to say that the JD-800 for the value is one of the most impressive and satisfying synths I've played yet! I was looking for a source of nice, thick, animated pads and this thing delivered!!! Amazingly fat and complex sounds ranging from new age D-50 type stuff to good old analog heaven! Can't recommend one of these highly enough! Thousands of patches available on the web as well as a nice patch librarian.
