While not as strong as Hole's stunning debut, Celebrity Skin is still a very fine record. If , for whatever reason, you feel you must hate Courtney Love you probably won't appreciate this CD. If you can put aside non music-related criticisms you just might realize that her singing is quite powerful, and the songs are poignant and well crafted.

There is much to be said about the Queen of Grunge, Courtney Love. She was married to the greatest Grunge musician of all time and made great movies and music. Now, on to Celebrity Skin. This album differs from every other Hole record, and that is what makes it stand out. Past records by Hole have been filled with much screaming and angst, two things that are seemingly required in the alternative genre of the 90s. This album is calm and melodic and has a "California" vibe to it. The guitars and other instruments are polished and the songwriting and production is spot on. While you will still hear some of Courtney's famous screaming, you will also find that she can actually sing and that bassist Melissa Auf Der Maur was perfect as a backup singer. This is the first Hole CD I've bought and I'll probably buy every CD I can find from this band. I had no idea how good they are, very impressed with the entire package - which is a rare thing indeed. I liked every song. Real musicians, very pro work with excellent arrangements, tasty tunes with most excellent lyrics. Clever and original. The reason I bought this CD is I saw some special on TV and this guy was saying how blown away he was by Hole and that he felt they were one of the best bands of the 90's (?) or something. So I figured -check check- check it out and damn! Bottom line: the bulk of the music product out there sucks. And it's way over-priced. I can't afford to drop $12-20 for one damn CD so I scoff my jollys here on eBay. This album, if I paid $15.00 for it: worth every penny. Lucky me I got it cheap 'cause that's the way I like it, baby.
