Joan Wilder (Kathleen Turner) is a romance novelist who lives her nefarious life through her characters. In real life, she has no life. One day she receives a package in the mail with a treasure map from her brother-in-law in South America. She also receives news that he has been murdered and that his wife, Joan's sister, is being held hostage for the map. Off she goes to South America to collect her sister. Things go wrong from the beginning when she gets on the wrong bus at the airport. The bus breaks down and she is stranded in the middle of nowhere hundreds of miles from where she was supposed to be. With bandits and drug dealers and the sort of people who kidnap Americans, she is really screwed! This is where she meets Jack Colton (Michael Douglas). He is the macho-man adventurer type right out of one of her romance novels. He makes a living capturing rare bird species for sale to Americans. He has this dream to one day buy a sailboat and go sail the whole world. But in an attempt to kidnap her for the map, a group of rival kidnappers destroy all of his cages and release all of the birds that he had spent months capturing. After a gun battle with the kidnappers he figures that she owes him, so he agrees to help her to civilization for money. It soon becomes clear that he is also somewhat of a scoundrel, and isn't totally trustworthy. The kidnappers who are holding Joan's sister, begin looking for her when she doesn't show up. When Jack learns of the map, he begins thinking about that sailboat and he too is now after the treasure. This is the beginning of their jungle adventure for a giant emerald that is worth a fortune. Even in the rainforests of South America Joan has fans who read her novels. Desperately reaching out for help, she finds a fan and ally in the form of a local drug lord. It seems that everybody from the local soldiers and corrupt cops to kidnappers, and even Jack are after this treasure, and through bombs, treasure-hunters, and mudslides, and a budding love attraction, everything comes together. The kidnappers are defeated and her sister rescued, Joan takes off for New York City. The giant emerald, lost in the fight and swallowed by a giant crocodile, is being chased by Jack in a hopeless attempt to recover it. Joan assumes she will never see Jack again, and can only wonder what could have been, between her and her "Wild Jungle Man". Then one day a big truck with a sailing yacht shows up in front of Joan's apartment building. A wild adventurer wearing Crocodile-skin boots climbs down. He has come to rescue his lady fair and to begin that around the world adventure.Read full review
Joan Wilder is a famous romance novelist, starved for adventure and love in her own life. When her sister is kidnapped, Joan heads to Colombia on a rescue mission and meets Jack Colton a gruff adventurer who helps her escape the various bad guys who want her for a treasure map her dead brother-in-law sent her. As they make their way through the jungle, Jack romances Joan, but his intentions are dubious because he wants the treasure for himself. The two find the buried treasure, only to have Ralph and corrupt police officials hot on their trail. Joan heads for Cartegena to save her sister and Jack shows up, as promised. A battle ensues between the various factions, and Jack swims off to retrieve the jewel. Joan returns to New York, thinking she'll never see Jack again. He shows up at her door with his long wanted sailboat and the two sail off around the world together. This has been a go to moive of mine since the first time I saw it. The characters are played perfectly. Michael Douglas is a tough guy with a Boy Scout inside, Danny Devito plays Ralph to a T and even the minor characters...Mrs Irwin, Ira with is "look at thos snappers Ralph", Juan the bell maker all add to the movie. This is just an all time favorite of mine.Read full review
