For an early '80's HF transceiver, the IC-740 excels in performance compared to its contemporaries. Minus one star for lack of a general coverage receiver (likely the main reason why the radio had such a short production period). WB3BDM /7

What a GREAT RADIO!!! This radio is awesome for a 40 year old radio. I especially like the display. They are a blue led readout. Not that LCD power saving stuff. This radio does every bit of it`s 100 watt output and then some. With passband tuning and notch filter you can eliminate most undesirable noise. The receiver`s selectivity and sensitivity is fantastic. The only draw back is there is no general coverage receive. You can only receive within the bands limits. A quick slice of J9 and you have transmit on the WARC bands. All in all, you get your monies worth.
The IC-740 is a nice rig, if it's an older unit. These radios were made back in the '80's, but a very nice unit. I have been using it for the past few weeks and learning its idiosyncracies. I am pleased with the purchase. I will probably buy and add the electronic keyer option shortly.
