First off, the radio is one heck of a talker and is very stable on sideband. That being said, the receive on SSB sounds as if you are listening on a blown speaker. Actually, the tiny speaker in the radio sounds better than any of the external speakers that I tried with it and I have quite a few. According to some of the sites that I was on, the front end of the radio gets overloaded due to a issue with the AGC circuit. Fortunately, I work on my own radios and can change the values on a few resistors to help clear it up. In the meantime, I have to turn the RF gain down to help take the warble out of the receive. Not the end of the world for me but could be costly to anyone who sends the radio out for service. I have friends who run the 2970 (later version) and the 2970n2. The later radios are the ones to go for that come under the RCI name. If you are going to use it as a mobile be aware that they don't like the bitter cold and take a while to come to temperature if it's below freezing.Read full review

Paid $300 for mine, shipping included, back in December (with a stock mic). I've owned a Galaxy DX-88HL, paired with a Texas Star DX-350HDV. I also ran a President HR2510, with that same amp (and got 500 watts PEP on SSB). But this radio, does almost as well as that 500W set up!!! Plus it has a wider frequence range, the ability to use morse code, has FM, split channels, and more! It is a LOT of bang, for the buck!!! Everyone that I have talked with--local AND skip--tell me, it sounds fantastic. Radio America #359.

Unit creates a full 400 Watts on all frequencies. High performance from a mobile and works great on a 102 inch whip antenna. You do have to run some hefty power supply cables and have a good charging system but it is well worth the investment. Transmit and receive are just fantastic!!
