The SR705 was one of the best receivers Onkyo has made (IMO). Extremely adjustable, great sound and power, wide array of inputs, phono amp, multiple (assignable) optical audio inputs, pure audio mode, powered Zone 2, THX. Quite a lot of features that hold up many years later. The only negatives (or potential improvements) deal with the the Zone 2 feature. First, Zone 2 only works with analog sources (this is true for all Onkyo receivers) so that can be somewhat limiting. Second, if you use Zone 2, as I do, for an extended area in a larger room, there is a slight time delay between the main speaker output and the Zone 2 so you get an echo effect in the room. For music this is not really noticeable, but for spoken content (radio commercials) it's like being in a large stadium. I believe many later model receivers now have an adjustment setting for this delay between zones.Read full review

and this thing is really tough to get setup. The problem lies not with the receiver, that seems fine. The problem is that you have to know what you're doing in order to get the most out of the technology. Speaker setup not too bad, but getting the cable box (hdmi compliant), the TV (not hdmi capable), the DVD, the CD player etc all synched and working correctly is honestly beyond me. I'm going to be getting some professional help in here to get this thing setup and have someone walk me through it. What I can tell you is that the pure audio and the dolby digital with the cable box sounds fantastic. The manual speaker setup is a breeze and very intuitive. The remote looks like it could control the NASA shuttle, but it's also pretty straight forward. I'm saving to buy a 1080p LCD flat screen w/hdmi, and once I got that, I think this whole thing will be rockin, but for now I have a toshiba projection HD TV that requires component hookup, and it's not taking anywhere near full advantage of what this bruiser of a receiver is capable of.Read full review
The Onkyo TX-SR705 provides incredible versatility and outstanding sound quality at an exceptionally affordable price - if you can find one! This receiver is perfect for a small to medium sized home theater using a large flat-screen. Receiver is THX Select2 certified, has 3 HDMI inputs (along with virtually all other types of inputs), one HDMI output and has Faroudja video processing. You just can't lose. The only "down side" would be the configuration of the remote - it's crammed with functions, which is great, but it IS "crammed"! I've been in the AV world since 1965 and I've had both Pioneer and Marantz, but now I'll take Onkyo now every time. This may sound like an advertising ploy, but it's not - it's just my review. Cheers!
This unit seems to do it all. However, for many folks, my self included, it may do to much. The unit assumes one understands the industry. There are many new advances in sound processing. This model is like a historical review of them all. It can be confusing with all of the audio options. Many of the audio output options are designed only for 6.1 to 7.1 playback. Since there is a very very limited source of material recorded for 6.1 and 7.1 playback the unit packs options for virtual 6.1 and 7.1. I, like many, hope the industry doesn't go this way. WARNING- RUN ON SENTENCE. It is overkill and hard to incorporate into a room tastefully, but then I never thought people would be willing to walk around with a cellphone plugged in their ear- what do I know? There is an admitted problem with Voice Sync. I know this statement has already lost some of you- "What is Voice Sync?" Rest assured Voice Sync can be adjusted for. I am not worried about the heat it operates at. This demonstrates the unit is dissipating energy like it is designed. There is limited power. If your listening room is larger then 20 by 20 then a more powerful Onkyo model is a better choice. Having said all that, once you familiarize yourself with the Onkyo 705 it is incredible because I, like everyone else, want it all.Read full review
Great sounding stereo and great features! Onkyo made this receiver at the perfect time with the right features. It’s old enough to be heavy, have a phono port, but it also has HDMI too! Perfect for my old school audio equipment AND my gaming consoles and equipment!
