This receiver has an accurate extremely clear yet warm sound. Even at higher volumes it’s easy to listen to with exceptional sound clarity yet no harshness. The receiver is also fairly easy to set up with a brief review of the operating instructions. The menus appear in the LED window & can be selected by remote or from buttons on the unit itself. I’ve read some have had trouble with the HDMI circuit board. So far though this one, even purchased used, has no difficulty with the HDMI inputs or output.

Well, when i received the...er...receiver, i was pleasantly surprised at the weight. No, this isnt some cheapy ten pound piece of silicon, this is a brick of solid metal, transistors and bakelite! Pull it out of the box, and the amount of rca, component and hdmi cables should be enough to satisfy anyone lookin to get their stuff plugged in(note: this cannot accept a component video in to composite video out...i learned the hard way -_-). Sound quality was miiighty impressive, it veritably sunk my dads 27 year old pioneer in terms of clarity and power, but i wouldnt expect a 200 watt amp to keep up with 700 watts anyhow... When i am able to procure a new television, i will comment back on the hdmi, but for now the sound has me in awe.
I bought the SR706 because I had a very specific set of needs: 1) Upgrade to surround (and a remote!); 2) Keep a phono input for my turntable; 3) HDMI video connectivity; and 4) Affordable. This Onkyo fit the bill perfectly. The sound quality is excellent. Four HDMI inputs were more than I expected to find for the price I paid. One note to those using HDMI for both video and audio: the default setting has HDMI audio disabled! I expected some issues with such a customizable device, but I feel like mentioning the HDMI issue because I associate HDMI with ease of use and simplicity on the user end.
The sound quality is excellent and the number of possible connections are abundant. The HDMI up-conversion from S-video and component makes this a sure bet if you want to retain some of your older equipment. Hooking up 2 Satellite receivers, 2 VCRs, 2 CD changers, 2 DVD players, Blue Ray player and an A/V computer system with a optical and HDM connection took some planning, but it all works and a love the sound and the resulting HD picture. Highly recommended
Great receiver, sounds real good
