It’s an older story that had been around since the nineties but is still able to cast the thrill of the submarine service and the political tensions of the times. Most people did not realize what the scope of spying the U.S. did at that time. Also the damage our own people who spied for the Russians. The story is well.written by Ms Sontag and will keep you completely wrapped up in the book. This was the second time I have read the book and it was in no way boring to read again. Perhaps I will read it again if I live that long, say about ten years from now.

This is simply a great book. Well researched and accurate. I followed these men, yet did the same only with more advanced subs. I am glad that the Cold War ended. I liked the 2nd review which sums it up. This is easy to read, it just flows. It does lack mystery but it is real so that is the suspense. Worth reading. You will learn the price of Freedom and what we do to maintain it. An honour to serve, a great, accurate and fast moving book that all should read.

There's much highly sensitive and classified material in here, most of it we were NOT allowed to even mention. If you were in, or under, during the 60's and 70's, you'll recognize the info and recall where you were and what you felt like all over again. There's LOTS of new info in here for most of us, too. Fascinating. Gripping. Chilling. Maddening. We listened to Sherry give the intro and paid rapt attention to her tale of the writing, and wanted to silence her and the book, but it was all authorized by the Navy and DOD, and it had been published. Sherry was very convincing and dedicated to the telling of the stories and exposing the proximity of danger, and why the commies ARE bad guys afterall.
The book was in exceptional shape. I bought this book for my wife whose father was aboard the Cochino sub when it sank. The rank and file sailors were told they were in the tropics, so imagine his confusion when he got to the surface. I have not read it but plan to. She says it's a great read.

This book is a well written, spellbinding compilation of stories of various clandestine submarine missions that happened during the Cold War with Russia. I bought this on recommendation of my son who served on a submarine in the '60's. We had NO idea of who, what, how, when, where, or why while he was out to sea. Reading this book has brought several conflicting emotions to surface---pride and horror, honor and stupidity, guts and fool-hardiness. Thankfully, our son came back to us alive. Not all were that lucky. It just reinterates the hard-learned, ever challenged fact that FREEDOM IS NOT FREE!!!!!
