We have a few games from older consoles lying around. SNES, Genesis, GBA. Our Super Nintendo no longer worked and rather than buy a used one and not knowing what we were going to get, I finally bit the bullet and bought this console after reading about it about a year ago. Right out of the box it ran the Genesis and Game Boy Advanced games with no issues. Only one SNES game worked. After cleaning off their contacts with some rubbing alcohol they worked just fine. The games looked great in 720 HD. We have had no problems taking games out of their respective slots. My only complaint is with the included controller. It's understandably hard to design a controller that can work with these different game systems. That said, it's not very intuitive, feels awkward, and the shoulder buttons are too flush with the body. It's fine for navigating the console's menus, but that's it. Use the original controllers for the appropriate game you're playing. A great value for a gamer or gaming family with lots of vintage game cartridges.Read full review

I received the console and was super excited that I would be able to have my children enjoy the games that their father and myself enjoyed as a child. The console looked great on the outside. So I took my children out and purchased tons of games and controllers. got it all wrapped up and gave it to their dad on Christmas. They were so excited to finally get to play it with him...I put in a couple different games and noticed that the cartridges were sticking in the console. There was no eject button, you just put all of the cartridges in like the old Super Nintendo game on the top... Sure enough after 5 game changes it wouldn't read any of the cartridges. The sad part is that I didn't even let my kids touch the machine. After trying to get something fixed, I was instructed that I would have to contact the original manufacturer cause nothing could be done... I don't recommend this console. I would suggest if you want something of good quality just get one of the old consoles... at least if it wears out after a couple of light uses it would be understandable with the age of the old consoles.Read full review

Short answer is yes. It's had a history of issues ranging from legality, bad software, poor performance compared to what they promised, and less than perfect build materials, but after 3 years from its initial launch I believe it's safe to say they've finally delivered. They want 100% compatibility with all games this system supports and at the beginning they missed their mark by lightyears. But after three years they've made leaps and bounds towards that promise and improved the running system immensely with their numerous software patches. Though they still aren't at 100% compatibility they've come much closer than ever before. Build quality increased, the HDMI out only option is a turn off for a lot of enthusiasts because they want to play on their old school tv, but this systems purpose and design is meant to appeal to the modern generation and is meant to bring retro gaming back into today's living room. There's an immense retro gaming library to choose from and it's just a shame some people only know what the PS4 or the Xbox One have to offer. I believe their choice in HDMI only was a good choice however would have been nice to include both options. Plus with the availability of upscaling and to see these classic games in high definition is an experience in itself especially to anyone who grew up playing those games. BIG DRAW BACK though is there controller. It's not ergonomic, it's not nice to the touch, it's EXTREMELY loud and clicky and just not worth using but that's my own opinion. I recommend getting original controllers which this system supports the use of either original NES, SNES, or even sega genesis controllers or if you have your hopes up for wireless gaming then I HIGHLY recommend 8bitdo's line of Bluetooth controllers. They have excellent build quality, wonderful performance (even though a bit hard to pair the first time), and are decently priced. All around the system is very impressive. They've still got room for improvement but all together I recommend the system to anyone who wants to dabble in retro gaming.Read full review

The Retron 5 is a great system for anyone who doesn't already have the original system! One of my favorite features of the Retron 5 is that it allows you to play imported games and use translation patches to allow you to play games in your own language. The colors and sound are great! The system is a great space saver with the ability to allow you to play games from the following systems right out of the box: Super Nintendo/Super Famicom, Nintendo, Famicom, Sega Genesis/Mega Drive, Game Boy, Game Boy Color and Game Boy Advance. With an adaptor that is sold by Hyperkin for the Retron 5, you can play Sega Game Gear, Sega Master System Cartridge and Sega Master System Card games. Such great value all in one system.

The system works great and is definitely worth the money. The only thing that I can say that should be a bit of a warning is to make sure that if you plan on using super famicom games on the system you have to be really gentle putting the cartridge in because of the space being so tight and when you pull the cartridge out pull it straight up so that it doesn't bend the pins. I have used it for famicom and super famicom games and they have worked perfectly from the get go. The controller takes a little getting used to but definitely functions really well.
