I found this book to be quite useful with great presentation of the food and detailed instruction for preparation. Well worth the money Martha Stewart doesn’t seem to let anybody down.

This cookbook is wonderful. If you are just learning to cook or even know some basics, you will love it. It is very descriptive with great illustrations and step by step instructions. As stated in the introduction, "This book has been designed and written as a course of study...which requires the student to master the basics before performing more advanced experiments." There is information on the essential tools and equipment every cook should have as well as learning about the "fundamental ingredients, i.e., onions, garlic, herbs and spices and how they are used to build flavors." There are seven chapters, 1) Stocks and Soups 2) Eggs 3) Meat, Fish & Poultry 4) Vegetables 5) Pasta 6) Dried Beans & Grains and 7) Desserts. Each lesson is followed by a recipe such as stock-making followed by a recipe that calls for the stock. Martha also encourages you to improvise, such as varying spices in a recipe to suit your own tastes, as you learn to master the skills provided in the book. I have not yet tried the lessons/recipes since I would like to read through the book first, but I will not be afraid to try since everything is clearly written. The only thing I would have like to see with each lesson/recipe is a total "prep time" and total "cooking time" as she does on her website. Some of the lesson/recipes are quite time consuming, as I have found out only after reading through them. I definitely recommend this book!Read full review

In this huge wonderful book there are answers to questions which one does not even know they have until they have a few goofs in the kitchen. Martha gives clear instructions for the preparation of simple and complicated dishes. Proper tools and methods make for a personal cooking school lesson which one can perform at one's own speed and choice of implement collection. This book and a few simple necessary tools would make a perfect shower gift or wedding p resent for a couple who likes to cook. I have been cooking for decades but love the book because there is always a better way to do things and this book takes out the trial and error. Bought one for myself, my daughter took it so this second one is for my bookshelf!
I watched her 30 minute programs on Steaming, Poaching , Frying, etc and noted the series was taken from this particular cookbook. I loved the simplicity of the recipes/prep. It is a great cookbook for both the novice in the kitchen and all the kitchen pros out there.
