This is a very diverse collection of classic Greatful Dead recordings spanning multiple decades of concerts. Old favorites, obscure songs as well as hard to find ones. If you can find a good price on this 5 disc collection it’s worth picking up.

Loved, loved, loved this box set. It's a fantastic chronicle of the Dead from their early days all the way to a beloved performance of "So Many Roads" at their last show. While there are more complete Grateful Dead box sets out there, this is the only one you need, IMHO. The only issue is that the box cover is made out of cloth and tends to get stained and ratty-looking very easily. But as long at it protects the music inside, it really doesn't matter. Highly recommended.

Having been a tape trader for years, I generally avoid box sets in favor of "Dick's Picks" or the new "Road" series. However, I made an exception because of a few tunes I didn't have in great quality..The Watkins Glen Jam has been in circulation almost since the concert ended, in a well recorded audience tape. But listening to it having been cleaned up and in well seperated stereo to boot, I felt that alone was worth the price of admission. Also, to hear what versions of what songs the band themselves liked was cool. If a So Many Roads Vol.2 came along, I would definitely buy it! From beginning to end, the many twists and turns of their confidence growing and the mindbending improvised jazz-like music took me back to a more innocent time, where the world didn't seem so cold.. There is hardly any genre of music that is not represented here, to boot. From psychedlic, country(!), blues, R&B, jazz, folk, and straight-up rock&roll, the Dead manage to put their own unique stamp on all of it, without compromising their sound. No band that I know of does this today, and damn few did back in the day. Love them or hate them, there is no denying that nobody else sounds like the Dead!Read full review
The Grateful Dead were and remain a phenomenon, thank you band members and crew and a special thank you to Robert Hunter for lyrics to live and die by, particularly the lyrical gems of "American Beauty"...

I think this is a wonderful historic compilation that captures the arc of the Grateful Dead through so many epochs of epiphanic ascent and evolution. It's packaged in an elegant box that includes a booklet of articles sharing points of view of the bands triumphs and challenges. Even the producers point out the daunting difficulty of rendering the vaults of recordings into 5 CDs. I've got all five stacked in my car player and have teared up several times with memories of shows and eras. Love it.
