Matango (Attack of the Mushroom People) is a fantastic movie from my childhood, this is a Rare and hard to find title and I have looked High and Low for this title, when I found it I took no chances and bought it immediately because who knows when or if this title will ever be available again especially a Brand New one, I could not believe it when I found a brand new copy of it at a fantastic price the only thing that can top this would be a Blu-Ray or a Blu-Ray steel book of the same title, this is a great addition to my collection, when I play the movie in my movie room on my 100" screen all I can say is what an amazing Movie and experience, all I can say is Thank You!!!!

As organizer for an off-the-beaten-track movie club and fan of weird films in general, I had to have this one for my collection. The films winds its way through some predictable twists with mostly cheap special effects and pedestrian acting, but it's the overall bizarre nature of the story that's the attraction here. It's not quite like any other horror film, a must-see for fans of the genre, not recommended for anyone else.

Mantango is a classic horror/sci-fi film from Toho Pictures (creators of Godzilla) This film back in the day scared the hell out of me. I first saw it on Creature Double Feature on Ch56 as a kid. The tale of stranded people on an island and how they deal with the fact that they may never get home is a classic story. But this film had a twist. The island is not abandoned as they think. But people who have been trapped before have eaten the magic mushrooms (sounds like an Alice in Wonderland story) only to be turned in walking monstrosities straight out of a bad trip. This film is a little slow on this DVD release. The TV version was cut by about 35-40 minutes making it a quicker story. But for any TOHO fan this film is must have for the collection.
Don't let the American title 'Attack of the Mushroom People' fool you into thinking it's a comedy, Matango is, in my opinion, one of the best Japanese Kaiju movies ever made, possibly one of the best monster movies made anywhere. It's frightening, truly suspenseful and eerie, mixing monsters with psychological horror. It relies on actual acting, plot and tension to frighten, and not gore or violence like so many other movies, in fact, there's very little bloodshed, (one man is shot, but it's not a detailed or gory display). The creatures are bizarre, mysterious, and cleverly designed, but several of the human characters are even more menacing. Selfishness, greed, lust, arrogance and other evils rear their ugly heads long before the Matango bring fear into the mix. In the end, the humans are more dangerous, ugly and cruel than the relatively passive, but still dangerous, Matango. The acting is great, and being able to watch it in the original Japanese, (with subtitles, as I don't actually speak Japanese), was a treat. I've loved this movie for a long time, and I recommend it for anyone who loves Kaiju, suspense and non-gory horror.Read full review
This is a movie I saw as a child. It was featured on local TV as a late night creature feature. It was scary from a child's point of view. Watched it as soon as I got it. Relived my childhood at that moment. Great place to visit but, I wouldn't want to live there. Good movie.
