When I first found this book I was really intrigued. The world of fiction has glamorized or censured this aspect of history, so this was a refreshing introduction to the realities of the "red light district." The author does a nice job of giving facts and recounting stories, and I felt drawn into the story of Lottie Johl, which made my visit to Bodie State Park that much more intriguing. I must admit, I was hoping for more stories and a longer book, however, this was a very nice one to start with. There are quite a few photographs and reproductions, throughout. I would recommend this for anyone looking to scratch the surface of a part of our nation's hidden away history.
The story that it tells is a scenario of the expansion of the country west. The men that went West forged the nation and created the country that we have cherished since then. The lonely life that they endured was made a little less trying by the female companionship that the these women offered. We cannot dictate our 21st century morality on this period and must accept what happened as something other than what we consider different.

A history of prostitution in the frontier from about the early 1800's to the turn of the 20th century showing the good, bad and ugly. There are many photos from that era showing some of the ladies and the conditions in which they lived and a few men. The book is laid out in stories of these ladies, the men who visited them and those who loved them and those who didn't. A surprise visit by Calamity Jane and notable Wild Bill Hickock
