It's a first person hack and slash . Good controls once you get used to it. The story is different , you "Brain jack " the bodies of people you come in contact with .well you take over them . Each new person has a different way of using sword, blade or whatever weapon they have which keeps the game fresh . The hack and slash is kinda repetitive but every hack and slash is. The cut scenes are not great but it doesn't bother me . Great value on the Dreamcast

I bought Maken X for it's connections to the Shin Megami Tensei series, a long lineage of convoluted yet thought provoking RPGs. What I found was not only true to that delightfully whacked-out heritage, but also a very satisfying game in it's own right. The game is a first-person slasher, where each character wields a sword of some sort. It works somehow, even on the single analog Dreamcast controller. Truthfully, the game is far from perfect- the voice acting sucks (no surprises there), some of the levels are pretty short, and some parts are almost unfairly difficult. But like I said before, the game works. The sword-play is fast and fun, and the changes introduced via the brain-jacking system are enough to try and get every character. Is this game deep? No. But it does have an interesting story and some amusing gameplay. Give it a chance- you might like what you find.Read full review
