I have a carpet that's held up since 1977, but of course has gotten thinner with all the vacuuming and steam cleaning over these years.(Can't afford a new carpet right now). I love the suction and cleaning part, but with this older carpet the cleaning brushes are the only way to get a forward momentum. Without the brushes turning, it's hard to push over the surface of the carpet cause there aren't any wheels to let it smoothly glide, like my current Hoover vacuum. I love it except for this last reason. I use my older vacuum more cause it's easier to push over the carpet. Guess it this one would be better on smooth wood type floors than carpet in my opinion and I'm sorry I can't really use it like I really want to!

Stronger Attributes This machine has strong suction. Although almost every external part is plastic, it appears to be well engineered and well made. The plastics are flexible where they need to be, rigid elswhere. The transparent collector section seems to be made of very tough plastic that doesn't get frosted immediately by dust that vacuuums inevitably suck into those chambers. On smooth surfaces, and when using the other attachments, the thing is a champ. And yes, it picks up pet hair well. I like that the rigid tube telescopes. The crevice tool and another small tool fit neatly on a caddy on the rigid tube. Weaker Attributes This is biggest bummer. The "power head" however is very lightweight, and powered entirely by the vacuum motor. Therefore it neither has the heft to push down against the carpet nor the power to turn the brushes if you apply pressure. I think the idea is to have a light touch and let the machine just float on the top of the carpet. Difficult to have this work well on even light pile carpeting. Compared to most canisters and all uprights, this unit takes up an unusually large amount of storage space for its small size. There is a smaller power brush, but I could not figure out if there was a caddy or place it snaps on. That is inconvenient. .Read full review

Overall a very nice vacuum. It is light, maneuverable, relatively quiet and has well thought-out design features. We bought this vacuum as a replacement for a very similar Panasonic model. The Dyson is overall nicer than the Panasonic except for one feature - the Panasonic had electrically driven power brushes on the head unit and the Dyson doesn't. Admittedly, this is part of why the Dyson is lighter and more maneuverable. Still, the Panasonic was a little better at lifting dirt and dog hair out of rugs and carpet. We're happy with this one recognizing the trade-off.

Overall very good. Strong suction and easy to empty. Picked up a lot of material that our old vacuum left behind, I tested it. Long hairs that don't get caught up in the rotor are held nicely in canister. I don't like that I have to bend over to turn it on/off (should have a switch right on the handle) and I don't like that I have to bend over to detach the rotary brush sweeper (don't know what you call it). I detach the rotary brush a lot to stick the nozzle into small crevasses where dirt particles build up so I wish there was a foot release to detach he nozzle from the floor sweeper. Otherwise it's lightweight, powerful and does a good job. My old vacuum had a wider sweep, so this one seems a bit narrow, but maybe because I'm used to my old one. Overall I like it a lot and thought it was a bargain for $229.Read full review

I do like my Dyson DC39 Animal. It picks up dirt and cat hair, on the carpet, well. It maneuvers well and easy. Cons: *The STUPID plastic hose! For the money paid it should be those ultra flexible rubber soft hose. *I don't usually mind the way the dirt canister is emptied. This Dyson has a cup/bowl that catches the dirt. When I press the button to discharge the dirt I then have to use my fingers to invert the cup with the dirt in it. My upright bottom just drops open and the dirt falls out. *I don't think that the floor beater brush allows the dirt to be sucked up (suction is good, but floor/rug seems to just push larger pieces, the size of cat litter, around. *I detest the trigger that you must push down with your finger, and hold down, to stop the brush from spinning.
