It is formatted NTFS, which is great because Windows as well as Mac is able to read it. I am currently running Yosemite on a 2015 Macbook pro. I was a little worried prior to ordering it that I might have to purchase additional software in order to read/write to this external hdd, but that is not the case. It works flawlessly with yosemite. It is very fast, nice sleek black design and is not loud. Huge storage space at a great price. Nicely packaged as well, Thanks.

Hard drive is used. Damaged on arrival, but didn't know until I put info on it. Will be a reminder to check them before using in the future.

ONE TERA_BYTE storage for 55usd? what is not to like. This unit sells for over 100USD retail, and at USB3 (blue tang in the cord) it is fast, hugh capacity, and reliable PORTABLE storage to off-load files, expand limited HDDrv capacity, and effectively speed up a rig. Light weight, and can be used with Smart DVD/TV to hold movies, photos, etc and moved from one station to another. Universal PnP means NO installing software. bought to have ONE source storage for files I want to keep, without having to OFF-load from DeskTop to Laptop. Having bought one at retail (115 usd) about two years past, I am most gratified with this VERY quiet, portable unit. Wish the cord was a few inches longer, but at about 18 inches it is no biggie. It does not take away from computer resources, at least not discernible, and if you download movies or have photos to want to display on some other device, like Smart TV, then it is a MUST HAVE. Highly recommend, based on thirty years of using and working on computers. And you can hook it into a Home network to make available to all users. NO adverse remarks come to mind, and if there were any I would put them in the report. This product is as good as any, better than most, IMHO.Read full review
The 2TB version is less money per gigabyte, but wasn't available when I bought this. I now have both. I paid $60 for the 1TB and $80 for the 2TB. That's why I only gave it 4/5 on value for money. Otherwise it's been no trouble. I have a MacBook Pro and used it to back up my internal prior to moving from 10.7 to 10.9. I reformatted it a couple of times before the backup and used MacFuse drivers to read/write to it as an NTFS volume under 10.7. That was slow only because the MacFuse drivers were set to fail-safe [write, verify the write, then write some more]. Under OSX Extended Journaled format it was full usb 2 speed on a usb 2 port. On a Mac you have to reformat to something OSX can recognize before it will mount. I installed the Fuse for OSX, MacFUSE and NTFS-3G drivers so I can read/write to it as an NTFS volume and share with Windows without the 4GB file size limit of FAT32. I don't have a usb 3.0 port to test in on but it ran just fine on usb 2. It fits in your pocket and runs from the port power and is much less expensive per byte than any usb thumb drive. I would recommend either the 1TB or 2TB to anyone needing storage. You'll spend much more on a usb thimb drive and get way less storage.Read full review
I built my own computer, shortly realizing that it wouldn't be a bad idea to back up all my files. I was looking at external hard drives, looking for something with generous capacity, but not too pricy. I found this moderately priced HD which had positive reviews from a trusted site. I bought this product (from eBay obviously) and have not had a single problem since. It works at a more than bearable speed. I should also mention that its size is small, so it fits behind my desktop with ease. I am very satisfied with my purchase and will look at more SeaGate products in the future.
