This device just works great, though it's not magical. I bought this for faster boot ups, application operations and faster disk caches for my graphics and video programs. Not bad, also, having low power consumption, quiet, and long life. I replaced my startup hard drive, a 150 GB 10k Velociraptor, in my early 2008 Mac Pro, with this device. The included USB 3.0 to SATA adaptor with Time Machine made migrating my system data and files easy. Start ups are quicker, applications load faster and work quicker, but only by a few percent better. As I get used to the speed increase, I'm forgetting how slow it was before. Aw, progress. I bought a 2-½" to 3.5" sled, but it didn't really mount right. One suggestion was to use velcro to mount, due to the low heat/vibration of SSD's. For right now, it is just laying in the tray with the SATA and power wires. I didn't go for the Pro version with it's marginally higher price offset by it's marginally higher performance and lifetime. The EVO was at nearly as good as the best of the other brands and a good value. Ultimately, I'd like a PCIe 4 card with 2 SSDs in a RAID 1 for a much better boast in speed. As it is, my Blackmagic scores are in the low 200's, Not near the 500MB/s rated, but it's way better than my old 80-90 MB/s from the Velociraptor.Read full review
I initially purchased this product because of the tremendous discount the seller was offering, and figured I'd need one for something in the near future... However after letting it sit in my "stash" of parts for about 4 days, I gave in.. and installed it in my 3 year old Dell i5 Laptop that was due for a wipe anyhow. It has been nothing short of amazing. I've used a lot of different SSDs and Samsung got it right with this one. Computer is running faster than brand new and with the 500 GB size, I don't have to worry too much about what I put on it vs. what goes directly to the external. VERY Happy with my decision to purchase and use it for my personal machine!
I'm A+ certified and Microsoft certified so if you want a straight review on this guy, look no further. I bought one for my business laptop and oh man, it's worth every cent. The drive is light and when I say light I mean 2oz or so. The drive is mostly an aluminum shell surrounding a small board packed with memory chips. Not a single moving part in this guy and that's what makes it great. A conventional hard drive is like a record player, bumps and movement cause damage and even failure. This removes any potential for physical failure from internal moving parts. Not to mention the MTBF is set at 1,500,000 hours or 171 years - which even if it's only 1/10th of that is 17 years. Do you have any WORKING hard drives from 10 years ago? The average fail is 1-4 years, chew on that a bit. It's $100 for a disk hd, it's $225 for this, it pays for itself after the first few days with just how fast it is. The width and length is the same of a standard 2.5" laptop hard drive. Virtually any laptop made in the last 6 years or so can support this and it's definitely an amazing upgrade from your conventional hard drive. You do NOT need a mounting kit to put this in a laptop to my knowledge. Most laptops have a built in cradle with screw mounts to support the drive. My dell had no problems or additional hardware required to install the drive.Read full review
I have found the Samsung EVO line to be an excellent value in the price for performance metrics. I switch the c: or boot drive from a high capacity SATA HHD to this SSD drive using the included DVD for mirror imaging. And converted the SATA HHD to storing all of the files I use. It was quick and easy! I appreciate the seller who placed this model on a one day deal so I could make this performance boost at a great price.
This device installed easily, make sure you also buy the correct cable to connect to your mother board. I have Windows 8.1 on it and it it so much faster than the old style hard drive. Even as I start to add more programs, it is losing very little speed. Make sure you keep an old style hard drive on the same computer to keep non-operating files like pictures and books; no need to clutter your fast SSD with items which load quickly and are relatively small in size. Also, the one computer which does not run graphics programs had only 4 GB, and it ran well. Very please with Samsung SSD
