This almost six year old model works fine with Leopard but be careful with software updates. I had to reinstall Leopard after this as it was running super slow. With Tiger, this machine is super fast having 1.5 gb memory. With Leopard, not slow but not fast either and will bridge the gap until one can get a MacBook. Still using it two years later. Never crashes, connects to the internet and is light enough to take on trips. With TenFourFox, this guy can soldier on for a couple more years. Watch out for Safari, as it will crash often. If you can get by with Office 2004, use this version instead of 2008 as it drags. This isn't a MacBook and doesn't come close but it more than serves everyday purposes with no problems. Read full review
I use this laptop for surveillance video. So it is running 24/7 and has not faltered yet! For word processing it is great, for viewing youtube, its okay. But remember, its the old Power PC and it has trouble with flash. So some videos on youtube will not work if they were made using Flash...or something like that. So you have to use some older programs sometimes. I.e. Gawker is the app I am using for surveillance and only the older version will work on the ibook g4, the new version of Gawker does not work, because of the PowerPC architecture... Overall, great computer for travel and word processing and Wi-Fi works just fine!
I got this circa 2007-2008 iBook in 2010 as a under $250 entry into the Apple computer world. After getting used to Apple quirks, I really enjoy it. Smooth operation, and seemingly less program / system failures than my pcs have historically had. That said, the apple seems to process a little slower than a pc equivalent machine. also, was surprised that I needed a full 1 GB RAM in order to stream video from netflix (where PC only needs 512); that is a little disappointing, and required unexpected RAM upgrade. Otherwise, barring any serious issues, I think I'm an apple convert.
My G4 got stolen the year I bought it by druggies who broke into my house. I I have acquired new computers since but most of the games are not compatible with the newer OS. Now I have my old friend back. I like the G4 because it has weight to it and doesn't feel like it's going to crack in half. The screen size is great for desktop use and is actually readable. I have a MacAir 11 and can barely read the screen.
Verified purchase: Yes | Condition: Pre-owned
This is the fastest of the 12" G4 iBooks. Only the 14" G4 is slightly faster, at 1.42 Ghz. The problems with the video, so common on the G3s were solved with this model, and although YouTube flash video is problematic on all the iBooks, this one (and the 1.42 Ghz) are at least watchable. This model has a built in Airport card (WiFi). iBooks are not MacBooks. They are not as fast, and you cannot load OS 10.6 on them. But they are not $400 (used) either, and you can usually get one for $150-$180, and that is a bargain for what you get. This machine does a lot of things well, like E-mail, word processing, and surfing the web. If you can afford a MacBook, buy a MacBook. If not, this is a great little computer at 1/3rd the price.
