Handsome Furs is a new project from Wolf Parade songwriter Dan Boeckner and his fiancée Alexei Perry. Vancouver seems to be a hotspot of late for strange, intense indie-rock and this is firmly in that tradition. Dark and noisy, minimal and hypnotic, the songs here are generated entirely with guitar, voice, hand claps and drum machine, and the sparse instrumentation lets the catchy riffs and choruses stand out. The pleading vocals and self-flagellating lyrics are familiar from Boeckner’s Wolf Parade tunes, but the odd, minimalist sound of Handsome Furs casts things in a simple, arresting setting perfect for headphone adventures.
