Thomas Newman's score for this recent film is reminiscent of both Ives and, even more, Copland, as well as New England in 1864. It stands on it's own, away from just supporting the film. The musical lines and phrases seem so open and natural.

Before the CD, the computers, plasma TVs, four women had their story that could touch us all--they had each other. As different as they were from one another, they learned how to get through the hardships of daily life during the Civil War, be a success, annd not change who they were. The music in the CD captures all of these feelings very clearly and makes you want to see the movie again. One suggestion--have a few tissues!

I really enjoy this cd! It has such an epic sound that sort of inspires you. I listen to it often when I'm cleaning. It really helps you think and focus as well. You don't even have to be a fan of the movie to appreciate this soundtrack. I highly recommend this disc to anyone looking for a positive, upbeat yet mellow and relaxing CD from start to finish.
