I'd not heard Radiohead and had not heard O'Riley, but read a review of O'Riley's interest in Radiohead in the San Jose Mercury. It intrigued me to read about how very much O'Riley appreciates this music outside his usual genre. I have always enjoyed playing piano, but have not necessarily found pleasure in listening to piano music. Perhaps this is in part because I have heard a great deal of live Baroque music and have not been as interested in romantic music. But listening to O'Riley's work in this cd makes me want to hear more of his own interpretations of Radiohead and perhaps other modern piano.
This is a beautiful recording. Try playing it for music loving frends who would never listen to a band like Radiohead. They won't believe it when you tell them the source of this richly textured heartbreakingly melodic tour de force. I'm in my late 50's and love Mahler, Sibelius, and Beethoven. I also love Radiohead, Sufjan Stevens, John Fahey and Wilco. Good music can come along in any time and I'm glad that Christopher O'Riley loves Radiohead and transcribed it for solo piano; he's missed nothing in the process. If your not choked-up by the end of this CD, music must not be your thing.
This is the same guy who hosts a classical music program on NPR called FROM THE TOP; he introduces young classical musicians, and plays genial host with a great sense of wisdom and humor. Wow! Versatility is his middle name! He does Ravel and Radiohead with equal expertise. He'll be in Princeton at McCarter Theatre during their 2006/7 concert season, and I'll be first in line for tickets.
I already love radiohead, this cd just brings it to a different medium for me. I don't usually like tribute albums but this is a completely different thing. You do not have to know the Radiohead originals to appreciate O'Riley's arrangements. You don't even have to be a rock fan, or a classical fan, for that matter. But I have a background in classical piano, and I would urge every pianist to listen to this recording.
Brilliant. O'Riley plays with as much heart, passion and intelligence as Radiohead has throughout their career. He is a true fan, a sentiment which transcends through this recording.
