When the Moody Blues played with the Colorado Symphony Orchestra, a performance and/or recording of Metallica playing with any orchestra was something that never occurred to any heavy metal fan let alone Metallica fan. Michael Kamen scrored the symphonic offering on Nothing Else Matters on the Black Album he suggested Metallica play with a symphony. From that point on, it was always in the in the back of the band's collective mind to actually play with an orchestra. This brought us the Metallica S&M double cd. After Metallica played live with a symphony, many other hard rockers felt safe in scoring their music and doing the same. This introduced music many who would have never dreamed of listening to to harder, heavier genre. This also showed the world how all genres of music are related and part of a greater woven tapestry and all are relevant.Read full review
I love this CD - once I get over the fact that I should have been at this concert but left it up to a friend to secure tickets, and by the time he remembered they had sold out! This is a live double compilation combining the talent and hard hitting sound of Metallica with the unexpected - the San Francisco Symphony - both masters in their respective fields; but at the same time, from two very different genres of music. Yet it works and puts a new twist on the Metallica Classics - a twist I loved!! In addition to the Metallica hits, they introduce two new songs Human and No Leaf Clover - the latter quickly became a huge favorite of mine, and Frontman James Hetfield introduces us to a new side of his vocal talents. For the most part, one would assume that Metal fans do not listen to Classical and vice versa, so this meeting of two distinct music genres brings an exciting and fresh twist to what were already superb and very much renowned tracks...an all time favorite album of mine and a MUST for a Metallica fan!Read full review

1- The Ecstasy Of Gold 2- The Call Of The Ktulu 3- Masters Of Puppets 4- Of Wolf And Man 5- The Thing That Should Not Be 6- Fuel 7- The Memory Remains 8- No Leaf Clover 9- Hero Of The Day 10- Devil's Dance 11- Bleeding Me 1- Nothing Else Matters 2- Until It Sleeps 3- For Whom The Bells Toll 4- Human 5- Where Ever I May Roam 6- Outlaw Torn 7- Sad But True 8- One 9- Enter Sandman 10- Battery There are a couple of songs I would have rather seen on here, but it happens. It gets 4 stars cause I love the sound of the Orchestra and Metal working together. Almost like a different form of "Unplugged" is where I would put this one. It had a lot of Critism, but it is really great for the playing in the background or while reading.
Owned this 2-disc set when it first came out but lost it somewhere. Picked up a new copy here dirt cheap. Metallica and the San Francisco Symphony play together some of the greatest Metallica songs ever. The two distinct genres complement each other flawlessly! Appeals to all across the generations. The first time she heard it my grandmother almost didn't believe it was Metallica!
