Symphony X as scored again with Paradise Lost! The album is loud and heavy, melodies are refined and the solos just tear your head off! Allen has more power in his voice and this is a great improvement. Even if it is, to my taste, one of the most agressive Symphony X album, some mellower songs come to softer up the album a bit, which is a great idea. The only bad point about this album may be on the guitars. I'm a guitarist, and I love solos. But sometimes it's just too much! Some solos are too fast, too often, and people who are less about solos may be bored of this. My other critic goes on the guitar sound itself : sounds too digital. Otherwise this is an excellent album and any prog-metal fan must buy it!
Symphony X really did it this time with their best all-around album to date. Faster, heavier, and more aggressive than any of their previous work, "Paradise Lost" is a metal thrill ride from the first track to the last! Russell Allen's improved range and especially his power and intensity make him probably the best vocalist in metal right now. Romeo's guitar work is also even faster, more complex, and more frequent than ever, as can be seen in tracks like "Domination" and especially "Eve Of Seduction." Despite going faster and heavier, however, melody is far from ignored. The title track is filled with soul-crushing melody and the every single song is catchy to the highest degree. The lyrics are very cool, too, as the story is taken from the poem by the same name by John Milton and is very epic and fascinating. Symphony X is an amazing band. They are one of the best ever in my opinion. This album is just fantastic in every way possible. Every member of the band is great at their particular instruments. If you do not like this band, or this album, you are not a fan of music.
