Alto saxophonist Jackie McLean made a number of albums in the 1960's for Blue Note records with avant garde sounding names New Soil, Let Freedom Ring, One Step Beyond, Destination Out and Demon's Dance but the music is nowhere near the true avant garde of the time. Only the session New and Old Gospel with Ornette Coleman on trumpet and a session misnamed as s can be classified as such. This session and it's companion, Destination Out features the unusual intrumentation of Alto Sax, Trombone, Vibraphone, Bass and Drums. Gracen Moncur is the trombonist and Bobby Hutcherson is the vibraphonist. A later Moncur session, Evolution added trumpeter Lee Morgan to the quintet. The music from these sessions were all original compositions by members of the group.
