The CD player will only play factory produced CD's and will not play music CD's of music recorded on those types of disc. My other JVC PC-X110 that I replaced with this one played all types of CD's. Disappointed in lack of this feature.

The worst thing I can see about this is that it doesn't have any line in jack(s), so to play sound from a phone, computer, etc., you have to use a cassette adapter, and with a cassette adapter you don't get the full potential sound quality of this otherwise very good boom box. This one that I bought has a broken cassette deck so I'll be taking it apart anyway, maybe to find some place to hook up a line in jack. It doesn't have line out jacks for connecting subwoofers, separate amplifiers, etc. either; I wonder if there is an internal connection point that could be used for something like that. It has fairly lifelike sound, typical of JVC (whereas for example similar Sony boom boxes sound more plastic-boxy to me, and older similar JVCs sometimes sound a bit more completely accurate in their optimal volume ranges). Fairly thick bass from these speakers with the bass boost on although no subwoofer. It goes louder without major distortion with the bass boost on than similar late 1980s JVC models, not the loudest available but loud enough to hurt you ears if you're close to it. The earlier models that say "3D Hyper-Bass" have actual subwoofers and their bass seems to go deeper, but they can't go as loud without distortion when their subwoofers are turned on as this can with its regular bass boost on. It has some flexibility in tweaking the sound frequency levels with the digital 3 band equalizer and separate bass boost, more flexibility than new models that only have presets to choose from if not as much as the more precision-oriented older models with the analog hardware 5 band equalizers. Nice solid construction, dual tape deck with synchronized normal or high speed dubbing, normal/metal/CrO2 tape type selector typically missing from newer models, plus CD player. It doesn't have Dolby noise reduction for tapes either, but probably the most frustrating thing to me is the lack of a line in jack to get the full sound quality from phone and computer output. And line out would be a cheap simple big improvement for some purposes too. Older similar JVC boom boxes had them, but for some reason this doesn't.Read full review
