Because each ham band has a separate transmit/receive module with separate antenna port, it can be run cross-band full-duplex. Its split VFOs enable the operator to compensate for Doppler effect due to range-rate of Low Earth Orbit satellite, simultaneously for uplink (red-shifted during approach, blue-shifted during departure) and downlink (the converse of the above). Its connection to external computer enables automated tuning for real-time hands-off compensation. The FT-736R is out of production, so can only be acquired in used condition.
I bought this transceiver for weak signal work during the upcoming VHF contest season.I like the full size design without all the sub functions like the new rigs. It was priced very well in good condition with the standard 2m and 70cm modules. It only needs a new bulb for the s-meter. Sensitivity is very good and power levels adequate. Could be driving an amp soon. Of course, being an older rig, may require repair / refurbish some time.
This Transceiver is the Pinnacle of high-performance in a VHF/UHF Base-Station radio. Unfortunate that Yaesu did not continue this product for another decade or two. 73, Don W6PJJ

The Yaesu FT736R is a versatile VHF/UHF radio. unlike today's compact VHF/UHF radios the unit can be expanded to 6 meters and 1296cm just by adding the modules. Besides FM has upper and lower SSB and can be computer controlled. These are the features I was after in a Multi mode transmitter.... The unit is easy to use, has its own mains power supply if needed. There not much to dislike about the unit except that the Signal meter could have had a white/yellow background instead of the black, requires considerable illumination to see the markings. The CTCSS tone generator should have been standard as well as some of the filters. Considering the age of the unit and that it low powered it is still a good performer, easy to use and set up, more stable temperature on finals due to large heat sink unlike the new high powered units that begin to shut down due to the smaller heat sinks, the PA modules cannot handle the heat and can become unstable. This i have experienced with disastrous results..........Read full review
