Anyone reading my reviews, realizes that I RARELY write a review. But once in a while I can be coerced. This review is a bit unusual as an email from ebay asking if I would review the product, left me somewhat confused. Obviously the automated ebay review spam solicitation tool has no clue that this product was created in 1984, so you are not getting the latest state of the art radio. So anything I would write for this review has most likely been stated before (for the last 30 years). If you are interested in buying a Kenwood TS-711A, then you are possibly more knowledgeable than the seller, and have already (like myself) had made up your mind about this rig. The TS-711A was the first rig that I really felt an attraction for, even before I earned my license. Something about the idea of having an all mode TS-711 and TS-811 to work satellite or attempt moon bounce intrigued me. No, I have not attempted to do either with this rig (yet), nor do I think it is likely. I have only worked 52 simplex and the local repeaters on FM. The all mode side of 2-meters does however spark an interest in me, and this appears to shine in this aspect. I have yet to change my 2-meter beam from vertical polarization to horizontal, but when the snow melts and the weather is a little nicer, I do intend to try ssb on this rig. All I can say so far, is that the rig I acquired from Kam radio (while used) is in VERY good shape, with no front panel scratches, and ALL of the functions work as they should. This from an era when most all of the Japanese manufacturers (Pioneer, Kenwood, Sansui etc) made electronics to last. Yes, it is possible that this radio might need a few fixes in the not so distant future, but all the documentation that came with the radio, makes those repairs fairly simple. As a 2-meter backup to my all mode TS-2000 (which is about the same size), I just don't think I could go wrong with this fine old rig. Nor do I think you would either.Read full review
