This Sony video cassette recorder and DVD recorder is easy to use and it has worked fine for the 6 months that I have been using it. It would be nice if when giving a title to my recordings, the process was simpler and it doesn't have certain common symbols, such as the apostrophe. It takes a few minutes to assign titles to the recordings in one disk. Other than that, it's a great product, so far (crossed fingers). I'm just very skeptical because I've had purchased at least 3 DVD recorders in the last 2 or 3 years and they have been awful and I have to throw them away. I do not record a lot because I don't have the time I wish I had for it, but so far, so good. Occasionally, a disk is rejected, but I guess it's the disk. I've always liked Sony for video and audio equipment, as it has lasted more than other brands. I hope this DVD recorder lasts for at least 3 or 4 more years because I've had 3 or 4 that have lasted maybe 1.5 years at the most and I'm very careful with my audio and video equipment.Read full review

Bought 3 weeks ago. Does lots of things and instruction book could have more details for first time users. This unit is same as Sony RDR-VX525 DVD Recorder / VCR Combo except 525 unit comes with HDMI cable. I also have the Sony RDR-VX525 DVD Recorder / VCR Combo and the instruction books are almost exactly the same . . the remotes are. I think I am going to like when I learn how to use all the timing features. How to use the Lists and titles are just not clear to me in the instruction book. I did call Sony help line and they helped me . . little hard to understand the tech but we got through it. DVD-R disc seem to work better. Also the Sony RDR-VX525 DVD Player / VCR Combo can usually be purchased cheaper on Ebay
We purchased this to convert all of our old VHS tapes to DVD before the tapes are unusable. This unit does that with a one touch button (dubbing). The quality of the conversion is really good. In addition, there is an HDMI output which upscales the picture to a modern television. Even though the output to the television is upscaled, the recordings do remain the original size aspect ratio. Very easy to use, very easy to set up.

Swapped the DVD drive over from another 555 - the picture is stunning - even the VCR output via the HDMI output to my Vizio up-converting 4K TV - at 60" the video of VHS tapes is totally acceptable; I am rediscovering the tape collection. And I will be able to burn some to DVD blanks to preserve them. And I have a spare 555 that I already repaired. If you use a cable box and use a line in and HDMI out to HD or 4K TV, this works great! Superb VCR and DVD recorder.
