At first I bought just 1 expansion rack to try out. It was great as it allowed me to consolidate all of my I/O running on 2 separate SLC500s to just 1. I've since bought 2 more racks that I added,1 on the 2nd SLC to cover some I/O & lots of future spares & the other as a spare that I can use for bench testing with other SLCs that I have for program testing & projects. These are very easy to install on an existing SLC500 & are very easy to configure in the processor's program. As a hobby gardener I use a 1747-L40C SLC & a 1746-A2 rack (with a 16 input & a 16 Output modules) to operate windows & fans for my greenhouse. I use the (recently freed up) other 'L40C SLC & 'A2 rack ( also with a 16 Input & a 16 Output modules) to control my Reserve (Rain) Water system for pump cycles & protection. I use the output module from this PLC to direct drive 16 inputs of a DL5 Dataliner (not shown here) for alarms & status. There is now a lot of spare I/O available for any future equipment controls. This worked out great as I really don't have any space in this cabinet for a 3 PLC without constructing a whole new cabinet.Read full review
