I have always been interested in the history of the Native Americans and how they were treated by the United States as it grew and developed. I read "Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee" when it was first published in the 1970's and I thought it was a classic--a real "eye opener" into this period of American history. "The Illustrated Edition" now includes more than 300 illustrations as well as 19 essays that shed even more light on the subject. I think it is one of the most important books I have ever read.

Dee Brown captures Native American history like never before in his writing of Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee. Recording the stories of the conquering of the west from the Native American point of view, Brown preserves history in this novel like never before. Using documentation from interpreted Indian pictographs and the first-hand statements recorded during treaty councils of the time, Brown succeeds in fashioning “a narrative of the conquest of the American West as the victims experienced it, using their own words whenever possible.” Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee is an invaluable collection of Native American history that presents the atrocities of Manifest Destiny in perhaps its truest light. In a country where most historical accounts of the westward expansion are presented with a western cultural bias, Brown’s novel forces a reader to see the opposite view of what’s presented in the history books. The conquering of western United States was a win for the ever-expanding Euro-American nation, but it came at a great loss to the Native Americans and their freedom. Bury My Heart shatters the perceptions of the romanticized westward expansion and brings to light the true stories from the Native Americans who experienced it first-hand. The illustrated edition of Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee takes the first-hand accounts collected by Dee Brown in his novel and accents them with hundreds of illustrations in the forms of maps, drawings, photographs, and paintings to create the most dramatic version of his novel yet. Documented in full color, the original 1970 cultural phenomenon from Dee Brown can be experienced in a whole new light as the illustrations bring deeper meaning and understanding to the stories being told. Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee will challenge all that a reader knows about the westward expansion from the 1860s-1890s, and powerfully and painfully transform their opinions about documented history.Read full review

This book gives us a front row seat into the whys and shows of American History pertaining to the Indian.......while not at all in agreement with how it was done, I see the lop sidedness of two cultures....one of which did not even have wheels available to them..one laying railroads And telegraphs.....virtually impossible for them to co exist

A beautifully written and profusely illustrated Indian history of the American West. It provides both the narrative content as well as the images and maps that make easier the process of creating ties between events and the locations where they occurred. Highly recommended.
