This is a complex story drawn from James Fenimore Cooper's classic from the 19th Century--well done in 1992. Daniel Day-Lewis plays Hawkeye (actually Nathaniel Poe) who was adopted by the Mohican chief Chingachgook after his white parents were killed. We see him at the first of the movie running through the trees in supposed 1751, and we know that he is the hero. But until the plot goes further along, we do not know whether the British or the French are the good guys. Actually, Hawkeye would like to go to Can-tuck-ee, but he gets wrapped up in the French and Indian War when he intercepts a Huron attack of a British caravan carrying the 2 lovely daughters of Colonel Ed Munro (Maurice Roeves)--Cora (Madeleine Stowe) and Alice (Jodhi May). The 2 girls travelled from England to be with their father and failed to get the mail saying not to come because of the war. Meantime, the fiance of Cora,Major Duncan Heyward (Steven Waddington), keeps pestering her about setting a wedding date until she finally tells him that she does not love him. Guess what? Cora has eyes for Hawkeye the minute that he saves her from the Huron. This movie has plenty of rifle and tomahawk action for those of us who seek it. Watch out for Magua (Wes Stude); he is totally evil and a Bendedict Arnold before Benedict Arnold was born. As I said previously, there is also the romance between Cora and Nathaniel (Hawkeye). But there is a secondary romance as well between Alice and the step-brother of Hawkeye, Uncas (Eric Schweig). You will be wondering throughout the movie where the title comes from, and your question will be answered at the end, when Chingachgook moans the fate of the Native Americans. This movie is well worth you time--especially for those of us who do not want to read the classic.Read full review
Great release of a classic. The music is fantastic. Acting superior. Can go wrong if you have never seen this and are into history.

Among our Classic Films. Should be saved in every collection. Important history of French and Indian War. Early pre-revolutionary struggles of our country, settlement and relationship with native American's. It should reveal the pain that native american's suffered as well as the pain of the European settlers. Exceptional production, cast and enviroment. True view of Adirondics. Musical score alone should be preserved and listend by itself. Tom
This is an incredible movie; great acting, beautiful scenery, great love story ( I will find you! ) great cinematography, fantastic moving soundtrack, and fantastic directing. This movie is probably in my top 10 favorite movies. Daniel Day Lewis is, as always, incredible and the man who played the main evil Indian should have won an Oscar. More than any other movie, this one baffles me why it did not win any Oscars
