I have a 5.1 Mirage OMD set-up (4 OMD-5s and the OMD-C1 in Burled Maple) for the bedroom and 2 OMD-5s (in Gloss Black) that I use as height speakers in my main 7.2 system in the living room. As reviewers elsewhere have noted, the build quality and high gloss finish of the OMDs is the first thing you notice about them. These are really solid and the finish is just beautiful for speakers of any price. But at this price point the build and finish are OUTSTANDING! Real sharp lookers, I doubt anybody would be disappointed. The grilles attach magnetically, a little touch that I love. The OMDs look great with the grilles on but even better with them off. But because the drivers face up rather than forward (for the omnipolar sound radiation that these speakers possess) I leave the grilles on as dust would be an issue over time. The 5-way binding posts are really convenient and very high quality. And the 5.5" midbass drivers (1 each in the OMD-5s and 2 each in the OMD-C1) sport true phase plugs! Another really nice touch and not common at the low prices these speakers sell at. In addition to improving sound dispersion phase plugs help to keep the voice coils nice and cool. OK, enough about how they look, how do they sound? Well, out of the box I was initially underwhelmed. Tough to explain what was wrong . . they just didn't sound very dynamic or musical. The owner's manual recommends 100 hours of break-in time before the speakers will sound their best . . my experience was that they needed closer to 200 hours. That's quite a bit of break-in, the most I've ever noticed. But in time their sound DID improve. As the drivers loosened up, the midrange clarity became very nice. The tweeters settled in and not only lost their initial harshness but offered better detail. After fearing at first that I might have to return these because the sound just wasn't what I was hoping for, I now love the sound they produce. One thing I think needs to be mentioned is that you can't expect a lot of bass out of speakers this size. The midrange drivers are only 5.5" and the cabinets are sealed (acoustic suspension) and compact. I prefer sealed speakers to ported because of their musical accuracy but that comes at the expense of bass extension. For me, a subwoofer is an absolute MUST with these as I listen to mostly hard rock. The OMDs DO have enough lower midrange to crossover very well and very easily with any subwoofer, though. If your musical tastes aren't as demanding bass-wise then these will be more than enough to keep you happy. I've also read in other reviews that these speakers respond better to more power and I can confirm that. Hooked up to my Yamaha Mini-System (stereo) at 40 watts per channel RMS the OMD-5s sounded good. Once I hooked them up to my Marantz receiver (at 110 WPC RMS) in the bedroom they really sang. I can see them being even happier if you could feed them even more power than that. These speakers are good enough to deserve and merit quality speaker cables too. I'm using Audioquest CV-8s and the Marantz/Audioquest/Mirage combination sounds really really nice. The omnipolar sound is worth a mention too . . its great! These speakers are designed to spread their sound diffusively rather than directly as most speakers do. The soundstage is HUGE and they really fill a room with sound. Music, movies, TV . . they all sound fantastic. The bottom line is that I feel comfortable recommending these speakers to anybody. Happy listening!Read full review
Used this to blend with my Mirage OMD18 R and L front speakers. Sounds great. Beautiful build quality and finish as well. Nice dispersion for center channel while maintaining focus
Verified purchase: Yes | Condition: Pre-owned
Bought the OMD-C1 to upgrade the center channel of my Nanosat 5.1 system. For our large-ish living room, this speaker really did the trick! Phenomenal sound that really completes a home theater system. Be aware, however, that the box is quite large (holds 2x 5.5 inch cones, after all). I was wondering why the OS3 frequently costs more for an arguably worse speaker -- answer is the size.
Product is great. The only issue it arrived damaged. Gjarboni (ebay trader) did not packed it well (assuming as it was free shipping) and did not take any responsibility. so the value of the speaker dropped as well. Oh, and do not try to rely on ebay either, no help at all.
